After the wonderful beaches, the Lighthouse Walk and cruising the town's shops and restaurants, what are your options?
Whether you wish to go North, West or South, Byron's Hinterland has many memorable and exciting places to see and things to do.
Starting from your Byron Bay accommodation at
Byron Palms Guesthouse we will drive you to your
rent a car pick up to get you off to an early start.
Heading
North, the village of
Mullumbimby offers a great place to take mid morning coffee at one of the many side-street character coffee places. A walk around town will soon place you in contact with a more traditional, alternative northern rivers lifestyle.
Heading North East, you arrive at
Brunswick Heads, a sea side village and small port to a fishing fleet. Here you find wonderful seafood at the Fisherman's Co-op, and plenty of places to lunch and character shops to browse. A walk to the end of breakwater wall and river mouth gives spectacular views back to Cape Byron and a protected sandy beach to cool off.
You may wish to go further north to the village of
Billinudgel then take the Tweed Valley way to the spectacular
Tweed Regional Gallery, the home of the famous Australian artist, Margaret Ollie.
Your next trip maybe to the West is to visit
Bangalow, another traditional North Coast village with beauty and character emanating from its architecture, shops and eating places. Heading on to the village of
Clunes, an old coaching stop, you find a general store, book shop and old wares market. You can then head for the amazing
Minyon Falls to see the cascading water falling 100 metres to the river below. Getting back to Byron through the villages of
Eureka and
Federal, then traveling via the Coolamon Scenic Drive with the option of following the signs to the
Crystal Castle.
Finally, should you wish to head
South, your first stop is the seaside village of
Lennox Head. The beach here is a unique formation of golden sand and also rock platforms and reefs. The view from the headland affords panoramic views to the north band south. Often hang gilders can be seen close up, hovering in the steady sea breezes.
Further south are the pristine beaches of
Ballina. A visit to
Flat Rock, only a short track to the left off the highway, reveals a line of breakers traveling alongside a large rock platform and tumbling onto an isolated beach surrounded by native bush. The camping ground here must have one of the best sites in Australia!
Ballina itself is a larger town with many shops and services. At the mouth of the Richmond River, you can walk to the breakwater and view the massive structures which keep this waterway navigable. Returning to Byron via the plateau town of
Alstonville, then traveling to
Tintinbar and the Pacific Highway, you'll discover further points of interest such as the quaint village of
Newrybar, home to
Harvest Cafe.
